Secondary Treatment
The secondary treatment phase is when suspended and dissolved biological matter is removed from the water. This treatment is performed by water-borne micro-organisms in a managed habitat. The mirco-organisms consume the biodegradable soluble organic contaminates. The less soluable fractions are then bond into floc. The floc then settles to the bottom of the tank and is removed. Prior to discharge of the water or forwarding to tertiary treatment, a separation process is sometimes required to remove the micro-organisms from the treated water.
